In our second instalment of ‘Meet the Team’, we will be taking the chance to introduce you to Employment and Litigation Solicitor, Neelam Afzal.
What first inspired you to become a Solicitor?
I was initially drawn to the legal profession due to the dynamic nature of the job. Every client, matter and solution is different, so working as an Employment and Litigation Solicitor can be hugely varied. As someone who seeks out opportunities to learn new skills and gain interesting experiences, being a Solicitor suits me extremely well.
Which areas of Law do you specialise in?
I specialise in Employment Law and Litigation, and since qualifying in 2008 I have worked on a multitude of different cases. I represent both claimant and respondents in contentious and non-contentious matters, and it is this mixture of work that keeps me captivated with Law.
The skills I’ve acquired in the years since qualifying combined with my Masters in Employment Law have equipped me with the experience, acumen and confidence required to go the extra mile for all of my clients.
What is the most satisfying aspect of your job?
Getting the result a client deserves is undoubtedly the most satisfying aspect of my job. Like most legal matters, Employment cases can be extremely taxing on those involved, so working towards a positive solution for one of these personal and sensitive matters is greatly rewarding. A satisfied client and a just resolution to a matter make every hour of hard work absolutely worthwhile.
What is the proudest moment of your career so far?
As I mentioned above, getting the result a client deserves is something I unfailingly feel very gratified with. So the occasions where my clients have been awarded six figure settlements stand out as moments in my career that I feel particularly proud of.
Often during complex matters you have to think outside of the box, so positive solutions to cases which have required problem solving are always ones which give me a special sense of pride.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I love to keep active. I’m currently training for a marathon and have a real passion for adrenaline sports. Outside of sport I try to do as much as I can to support the inspirational work of the staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Meeting new people and experiencing different cultures is also something I that enjoy so I travel whenever I can.
